Enhance the Windows installer in a way that if it detects that Internet is available, it should automatically open the final web page with details about joining FF, registering to receive newsletter, etc. (the currently installer asks the user if he want to open the page). Maybe it would be also good to open the release notes automatically.

The default is to automatically open the web page unless the user unchecks the box. (Although for v3 it isn't working correctly, but that is another matter. It will be fixed.) So the installer already does what you ask, doesn't it?

The content of the web page is another matter. I must confess that I don't look at it much when I'm testing the installer.

Opening two things simultaneously doesn't sound like good UI design to me. Either we want users to focus on the web page, or the release notes, but not both.

Forgot to mention, when I said it isn't working correctly, I meant that it doesn't appear to go to a version specific URL. It goes to a general landing page. I think that is wrong, but maybe it is as designed.

Hi Paul! So, consider removing the checkbox and opening it whenever internet is available :)

About release notes, well, maybe a more elegant solution would be to put a link to RN in that page (with some emphasis). In this case, we would need separated pages to every release, or special code in the page that would check FB version (passed in the URL) and link to the correct Release Notes.

I don't think it is a good idea to open this landing page without an opt out option. When I install Firebird on a production server I just want to install Firebird and don't want to have to close the browser (I already know the advantages of Firebird, thank you).
To " detect that Internet is available" it must at least try to go out to the Internet. A program trying to do that on a production server can easily be rated as suspicious or dangerous.

If you give the chance to the user to not open the page, in the modern days, where everybody is always in hurry, probably most of them will just opt to not see it. About closing the browser, you already have command line switches to do a SILENT and VERYSILENT install, etc. if you want a faster installation. Anyway, I think clicking the close button doesn't take more than 0.5 second of your time (how many FB servers do you install in one day to consider this an annoyance? <g>). About the installer being detected as "suspicious", it can be signed to reduce this chance, and remember that most of the installers of famous apps today depends on internet to download extra stuff, etc. The purpose of my suggestions is to try to increase the number of FF members, to give more visibility to sponsors and to grow the number of registered emails. We have a damn huge community of users around the world, but we have no direct way to reach those people. A huge email database of users would be a great addition to the Project, and I'm sure it would help in several situations like notifying about new releases, asking for testers, advertising conferences, asking for donations, etc. Of course, I'm not suggesting any kind of spam, that's why it is an opt-in subscription.

If we want to present information the user, it must appear right directly in the installer dialog. I do not trust applications that open popups.

Adriano, I think we can do both. Btw, the installer dialog doesn't has much extra space.
