It seems to me that the current nbackup documentation is lacking information on the existence and meaning of RDB$BACKUP_HISTORY. More background information on the technical workings of nbackup in the manual would probably be a good thing as well. I think that my answer and/or the FB 2.1 release notes (http://www.firebirdsql.org/file/documentation/release_notes/html/rlsnotes210.html#rnfb20x-util-backup-nbak ) might be a good starting point.
I've added two sections: one on backup history, and one with technical background information based on my stackoverflow answer. There is probably still some room for improvement (in some areas technical background is mentioned as an aside or not, these might be moved).

I just answered a question on stackoverflow (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25555214/is-it-possible-to-know-the-level-from-the-last-incremental-backup-made-with-nba ) on looking up the last backup level done with nbackup.
